adminUNIVERSITIES will be compelled to have at least 60 percent of their enrolment in science and technology programmes starting next year, a senior education official has said.
Deputy Minister of Higher and Tertiary, Science and Tertiary Education Development Minister Dr Godfrey Gandawa told the Sunday News on the sidelines of the official opening of the Intentional Research Conference at the Midlands State University that his ministry has already sent in a circular to all universities compelling them to have at least 60 percent of new students enrolling in science and technology faculties.
Dr Gandawa said science and technology degree programmes were more relevant in Zimbabwe in the country’s endeavour to speed up economic recovery.
“As a ministry we have instructed all universities to focus more on science and technology programmes rather than humanities and arts programmes that might not contribute directly in the growth of the economy. It is evidently clear that science and technology programmes are more relevant in the country. All universities should start implementing the directive from the ministry in their next intakes,” he said.
Dr Gandawa said not all higher and tertiary education students should have Ordinary level Mathematics for them to be able to attain degrees. He said Mathematics was supposed to be a prerequisite to students enrolled in science and technology programmes as well as commercial degree programmes.
“There are other programmes that really do not require Ordinary level Mathematics. However, the argument is if one has Ordinary level Mathematics they will be at a certain degree and level of understanding and reasoning. The proposal will also not apply in retrospect that is to say those that have already been enrolled might be able to complete their programmes,” he said.
