“Sunway City or any other company that hold rights to a piece of land — whether it has legally or illegally been settled should give sufficient notice to the occupiers to vacate,” he said.
He said in the case of Sunway City, the over 200 families made homeless by the destruction of their makeshift homes should have been given sufficient notice to move.
He said Government should have been notified of the decision to evict the families before the action.
“We would have prepared adequately for the orphans, the widows and destitute whose plight has been worsened. Simply demolishing the houses was insensitive. It smacks of malice and low regard for the poor. We are ordering the IDC to stop the demolitions,” he said.
He said the company should use the rainy season to negotiate the movement of the land occupiers to a more humane settlement.
He said in Southern Africa there is very minimum construction work between November and February because of the rainy season.
“We are disappointed with the manner Sunway City (IDC) handled the matter,” he said.
Epworth Local Board chairperson Councillor Gift July has already appealed to Government for more land to house the over 200 affected families.
