Government has strengthened the delivery of technical and vocational subjects, science, technology engineering and mathematics at all levels to build a firm foundation for human capital development, a Cabinet Minister has said.
Primary and Secondary Education Minister Dr Lazarus Dokora said the ministry heeded President Mugabe’s calls for transformation of the structure and content of the education system, and were now implementing the national curriculum framework for primary and secondary schools.
He was speaking at the annual children’s party that is held on the eve of Independence in Harare.
This year’s theme for the celebrations is Zimbabwe@36: “Celebrating Peace and Economic Development”.
Dr Dokora said they have embedded the values and competencies for individuals in the new framework.
“They must manifest the attributes of peace, good citizenry and a positive work attitude for the socio-economic development of our nation,” said Dr Dokora.
“The cross cutting thematic across all the learning areas to be covered at infant, junior and secondary education levels imply that no learner shall leave our sector without some experience with their hands and some acquired skills.”
He said in line with the Government’s 10-Point Plan for economic growth of August 2015, all primary schools will now be teaching agriculture that will be examined at Grade Seven level in terms of the new framework.
“Through this curricular intervention, our school system is responding to the need for revitalising agriculture and the agro-processing value-chain,” said Dr Dokora.
On another note, Dr Dokora said his ministry was part of the Government response mechanism on the El Nino-induced disaster.
In this regard, he said, plans were underway to introduce an emergency school feeding scheme in the worst affected areas of the country, while other schools focus on institutionalising the sustainable home-grown school feeding approach.
