The Government is taking steps towards creating an enabling environment for the growth of Internet of Things (IoT) technology to drive economic growth.
Internet of Things refers to the collective network of connected devices and the technology that facilitates communication between devices and the cloud, as well as between the devices themselves.

Zimbabwe is now tapping on IoT to improve efficiency, enhance connectivity and create new opportunities across various sectors.

Speaking at the launch of the IoT Community in Zimbabwe on Friday, Information, Communication Technology, Postal and Courier Services Minister Tatenda Mavetera said the country has recognised the immense potential of IoT to drive the fourth industrial revolution.

“We believe that IoT can play a crucial role in our national development agenda, promoting sustainable economic growth and promoting the quality of life of our citizens,” she said.

Effective Government frameworks, she said are crucial to ensure the ethical use and security of IoT and any other technologies in Zimbabwe.

“We are committed to implementing policies and strategies that will facilitate the adoption and performance of IoT.

“From the policy’s perspective, the National ICT policy launched by President Mnangagwa in March in Somabula made reference to embracing the emergency of technology,” the minister said.

The IoT has the power to transform industries such as agriculture, health, transportation, manufacturing and many others.

“By connecting devices in a data-driven decision-making process, IoT innovations have the potential to enhance efficiency, productivity and competitiveness,” Minister Mavetera said.

A thorough policy review, she said is underway to address any shortcomings and safeguard against data privacy violations and technological misuse.
