The Government is collaborating with local authorities to address the state of roads across the country through the Emergency Road Rehabilitation Programme.

The ERRP2 initiative aims to repair roads in both urban and rural areas that have been damaged by the recent heavy rains.

Yesterday, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona held a meeting in Harare with officials from local authorities and road authorities.

Some of the senior officials that attended included Transport and Infrastructural Development Permanent Secretary Engineer Joy Makumbe, Zinara board chairperson Dr George Manyaya, Zinara chief executive Mr Nkosinathi Ncube, acting Harare mayor Councillor Prince Mutebuka, Bulawayo City Council mayor Clr David Coltart and representatives from various stakeholders.

Following the meeting, Minister Mhona expressed optimism about the collaboration, stating that the Government is set to work closely with local authorities to repair roads nationwide.

Said Minister Mhona: “Today’s meeting was of paramount importance in that after the incessant rains that we received, you know that in terms of the agricultural sector, it’s a plus, but when it comes to infrastructure, it is damaged and this is what has happened.

“Not to say that our roads were not done properly, but the amount of rains received and on some sections we had flash floods which caused significant damage.”

Minister Mhona said it was important to collaborate to ensure citizens have access to trafficable roads. He expressed gratitude to President Mnangagwa for acknowledging and addressing the concerns of the citizens, through Statutory Instrument 47 of 2021, which rallied the ministry to rehabilitate roads.
