GOVERNMENT has partnered various land developers to provide decent accommodation in the country’s 10 provinces as part of efforts to clear the housing backlog hovering at over one million.
The first phase of the project will start next month, with developers being tasked with the construction of a minimum of 100 blocks of flats per month, in all provinces.
Giving an update on the state of housing provision in the country at a media briefing in Harare yesterday, National Housing and Social Amenities Minister, Daniel Garwe, said the programme will complement ongoing Government projects in the provision of housing to achieve the target of 225 000 housing units by 2025.
“The first phase has four developers. We flighted tenders for developers to join the Government in the delivery of houses.
“Each developer will be assigned to a province.
“We expect that in 12 months, we will have produced 1 200 blocks of flats per province, of 20 units each.
“So, we will surpass the target of 225 000 units by 2025 using our new technology.”
Local banks, such as CABS, FBC, and ZB Bank, also sourced affordable lines of credit to the tune of US$63 million from Pan African financial institutions, specifically for the provision of housing.
“We are working with Pan African financial institutions created purely to provide housing finance to African countries,” said Minister Garwe.
