Bulawayo provincial construction and operations officer Engineer Queen Mkandawire yesterday said the handover ceremony would be held at Cowdray Park’s Hlalani Kuhle/Garikai Phase 2 site.
“The Minister of National Housing and Social Amenities, Giles Mutsekwa, and his counterpart in the Ministry of Local Government, Rural and Urban Development, Dr Ignatius Chombo, would officiate at the ceremony,” said Eng Mkandawire.
The Governor and Resident Minister for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Cain Mathema, the Mayor Councillor Thaba Moyo and council staff are also expected to attend.
The handing over of the housing scheme is set to end the controversies surrounding the allocation of housing stands and ensuring that beneficiaries get adequate sewer and water services.
The call for improved provision of housing comes amid concerns over inadequate budget for the sector by the Ministry of Finance.
This year, Finance Minister Tendai Biti allocated $33 665 000 for housing, the bulk of which is meant to cover recurrent expenditures.
There have also been calls on the Government to capacitate local authorities to provide housing.
Late last year, the Portfolio Committee on Housing challenged organisations such as the National Social Security Authority (NSSA) to play their role in mobilising funds for affordable houses for its members.
The committee recommended the revival of the rural housing facility in order to provide adequate structures for remote communities.
It also recommended the review of housing regulation and the need to craft a policy that would make provision of housing a human right.
