VOCATIONAL training centres should be uplifted and standardised so that they are in line with modern skills and labour demands, says Deputy Minister of Sports, Youth, Arts and Recreation Cde Yeukai Simbanegavi.
Speaking during a familiarisation tour of Chaminuka Vocational Training, Deputy Minister Simbanegavi said most of the ministry’s budget next year would be channeled towards upgrading these institutions.
“The bigger chunk of our 2019 budget will go towards upgrading these institutions in order for them to introduce short courses so that our youths do not get discouraged in life. The new dispensation is talking about quick wins to empower youths and Chaminuka should be the benchmark.”
Speaking at the same occasion, Chaminuka Vocational Training Centre principal, Mr Alois Musariri, said the institution was sitting on a 1 800-hectare plot of which 400 hectares as arable and used mainly for agricultural purposes which saw it being the best Government institution with the highest maize yields.
He, however, bemoaned lack of funding from Government and urged the deputy minister to help secure funding to help with some of the projects that the institution was undertaking such as the construction of a guest house and girls’ hostel among other projects.
