EX-HIGHLANDERS FC gunman Graham Ncube headlined familiar faces trying their luck at How Mine’s pre-season training at Luveve Stadium yesterday.The striker who was offloaded by the Bulawayo giants during the last mid-season transfer window to pave way for disappointing duo of Tinashe Chipunza and Master Masitara is hoping to have a dance in the top flight with the gold miners.
Chipunza and Masitara had been brought in to ease the goal scoring problems at Bosso, but both players failed to beat the five goals Ncube banged during his time at Highlanders. Ncube went on to finish the season at Bantu Rovers.
Speaking after his training session, How Mine’s coach Philani “Beefy” Ncube said Ncube “is trying luck just like other players”.
“Graham is trying his luck like everyone else, so it won’t be a surprise to see him scoring against Highlanders at one point, that is, if he impresses because competition is stiff,” said Beefy.
Bantu Rovers Fortune Nkomazana, Gracious Muleya and McClive Phiri were also trying their luck at the Caf Orange Confederation Cup-bound How Mine. Besides the quartet of Ncube, Muleya, Nkomazana and Phiri, only four of the 12 publicised How Mine’s signings for their African safari attended yesterday’s session.
The four who have been registered for the Caf competition who were at the opening day are Young Warriors and Aces Academy goalkeeper Donavan Bernard, Blessing Sande and Marvel Samaneka.
“The first training session of the season is always disappointing. The majority of the players are travelling. They will join the rest of the team tomorrow,” said Beefy.
Gilbert Banda, Warren Dube, Brighton Dube and Terrence Majo were the notable senior players who were going through their paces alongside trialists.
Veteran defender Herbert Dick, goalkeeper Ephraim Mazarura and Ocean Mpofu who appeared at the Highlanders training camp yesterday were the notable absentees. Beefy refused to comment whether Mpofu who was not registered for the Caf competition is still in his plans or not.
The How Mine coach expressed satisfaction with his squad ahead of the new season and their dance in the Caf Orange Confederation Cup.
“Even these guys that attended the first day practice session are strong enough to withstand any team in the league,” said Beefy.
