A Victoria Falls man has been arrested for allegedly sexually abusing his 13-year-old granddaughter on six occasions resulting in her falling pregnant.
The 63-year-old man of Jongwe Village under Chief Mvuthu, who allegedly raped the girl in the absence of his wife, was arrested after family members discovered the girl’s pregnancy.
It is alleged the man fled to Zambia after he learnt that the juvenile was pregnant but returned this month.
He was not asked to plead when he briefly appeared before Victoria Falls magistrate Sharon Rosemani facing rape charges.
He was denied bail on the basis that he once fled. Rosemani remanded him in custody to September 18 for trial at the Hwange Regional Court.
Prosecuting, Listen Nare told the court that sometime between January and June 2015, the man would go into the juvenile’s bedroom and allegedly force himself on the girl. Nare said the girl’s grandmother was not at home at that time.
“The man went to the girl’s room. He told her he was going to spend the night with her. The man then went on to order the girl to remove her clothes and had sexual intercourse with her. He raped her on different occasions without her consent,” Nare said.
The court heard that the girl did not immediately report the incident out of fear.
Nare said sometime in June this year, the girl visited her parents who then discovered that she was pregnant. Her mother and some neighbours asked her about the pregnancy and she revealed that her grandfather had sexual intercourse with her on six different occasions.
