A BULAWAYO man has been arrested for assaulting his 79-year-old grandmother for refusing to show him her funeral insurance letter. Allington Sheriff Mathobela, 28, slapped Soneni Mpofu after she refused to show him the letter which stated the money that would be paid out from the policy, for her funeral.Mathobela pleaded guilty to physical abuse when he appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Sibongile Msipa Marondedze.

She sentenced him to three months imprisonment wholly suspended for five years on condition that he does not within that period commit a similar offence. Mathobela apologised before the courts for beating his grandmother.

“I’m sorry for the way I reacted. I promise it won’t happen again,” he said.

Prosecuting, Margaret Muhomba said on August 20 at around 7PM, Mpofu received a letter stating the amount of money to be paid out for her funeral. She said Mathobela asked to see the letter but his grandmother refused.

“This didn’t go down well with Mathobela who slapped his grandmother once on the shoulder,” Muhomba said.

The grandmother reported the matter to the police and Mathobela was arrested.
