A 75-YEAR-OLD grandmother from Chizungu village in Mberengwa, Midlands Province was burnt to death in a kitchen hut while she was trying to put out a raging blaze that had engulfed her hut.
The incident was confirmed by Midlands Police Spokesperson, Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko.
“We confirm the incident and urge members of the public to be cautious when using fire,” he said.
It is alleged that Anna Siziba (75) and her sister Lillian Nungu (78) prepared tea in a grass-thatched hut and went outside while leaving the fire burning.
The pair sat in the yard under a tree and drank tea. While they were drinking tea, a whirlwind blew through the yard, as a result, the roof caught fire. Seeing the hut engulfed in inferno, the deceased dashed into the hut to put out the fire. Soon after that, Lillian called her but she could not respond.
“Her sister called her in a high-pitched voice, but there was no response. She then dashed to inform neighbours but it was too late. Neighbours dashed to the scene and it was found that she was burnt beyond recognition,” said a neighbour to the deceased, Timon Chivinge.
