Great night for Tanga

Entertainment Reporter

ORGANISERS of Tanga wekwa Sando’s 50th anniversary believe they nailed it.

The township jazz supremo celebrated half-a-century in the game with a vintage performance at Alliance Française last Friday.

Fellow artists, childhood friends and the jazz community graced the event.

His well-choreographed act came as a gentle reminder to the new crop of jazz artists that he still has the mojo. With a rich catalogue of sing-along tracks, he easily won hearts of many with a show to remember.

All the credit goes to show promoter Josh Hozheri of 105 Promotions in partnership with Zagga Musik.

Hozheri, who is now grooming a young promoter, Roy Zuka, simply showed Tanga some love by coordinating the event.

Tanga’s former backing vocalists, Rute Mbangwa and Diana Samkange and long time friend John Muyambo popularly know as Chibhodhoro, did not disappoint on the night they were also celebrating their mentor’s milestone.

In an interview with H-Metro, event coordinator, Zuka, said:

“We are glad that everything went according to plan.

“Some people have been saying negative stuff about Tanga but we won’t read much into that since we are celebrating a life well lived and a legend.”

Zuka is planning more shows to celebrate the crooner’s legacy.

“Like we said during the build-up to the show, Tanga is a great man who deserves to be honoured for his milestone and we can only let ourselves down by not respecting such people.

“Fifty years as a professional artist is not a joke at all since it means a lot for this crooner.

“Fellow artists need to learn from such legends to be able to conquer.

“It’s a journey well lived which needs to be celebrated in style.  We hope to take such celebrations to his ghetto of Highfield where he was raised.

Tanga, one of the veterans who have seen it all, was born in 1954.

He became a professional musician in 1971, aged 17.

He is famed for chart-toppers as Hapana Asina Wake, Nyenyedzi, Mariana, among others.

He has weaned off a number of artists who include Selmor Mtukudzi, Tendai Manatsa, Afrika Revenge, among others.

He said he owes his success to God’s grace.

“I see the grace of the Lord when I reflect on my career as a professional artist.

“Some of my peers are now late  and to be one of the last men standing  from the crew I worked with is not a joke.

“I’m grateful that God is still doing wonders in my life,” he said.
