IT TOOK Mavis Zondo (62) 10 years to save enough money to build the house of her dreams.
a?I built my house with money I made from sewing school uniforms,a? she said.
But it only took hours for a mysterious fire to burn her house to the ground last Friday.
Mavis from Nquthu, KZN, said the fire has struck three times since April.
She said the fire can only be seen by her neighbours. Sangomas have told her a jealous and greedy tikoloshe is to blame.
Mavis was in church when the first fire occurred in April.
a?My son Bonginkosi (34) said he saw our neighbours running towards our house with buckets in their hands. They said the house was on fire, but he and his wife couldnat see any flames. They only saw the belongings in my bedroom turning to ash,a? said Mavis.
She said the fire struck again that month when she was at church.
This time it burnt the hut outside the house. She called local church members to pray with her. A few minutes after they had left, Mavis saw neighbours running towards the house with buckets of water.
a?We couldnat see the fire. We only saw smoke and ashes. It was very painful. Now I sleep at my neighbouras house,a? said Mavis.
Mavisas neighbour, Nomathemba Gabuza (53), confirmed that they could see the fire.
Sazi Mhlongo, president of the South African Traditional Healers Association, said Mavis needs to consult an inyanga, not a sangoma.
a?The inyanga will give her muthi to sprinkle around the yard.a?
