Green ambassador Dereck Mpofu donated an assortment of goods worth US$6 000 to Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims from the proceeds of the two “green” shows held last month.
Mpofu, acting on behalf of Environment, Water and Climate Minister Saviour Kasukuwere, handed over the goods to the Civil Protection Unit.Speaking during the handover ceremony, CPU deputy director Sibusisiwe Ndlovu said they appreciated all the efforts made by artistes to assist the Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims.
“You (artistes) have done a wonderful thing to give these people clothes and mealie-meal because food is a necessity to them and may others also learn from what you have done.
“We hope more artistes will do the same and it shows that you are a united people,” she said.
Mpofu said they chose to hand over the goods to CPU because they are the people working with those affected by disasters.
“We chose to give the goods to the CPU because they are the people that work with the victims every day. We thank all the people that supported us by attending the two ‘green’ shows we hosted last month.
“Let us continue to support our fellow brethren and we thank Minister Kasukuwere for the support he gave us,” he said.
BaShupi, who was one of the artistes who performed during the shows, was part of the proceedings.
Multiple award-winning South African songbird Zahara performed at the two shows that were meant to raise funds for Tokwe-Mukosi flood victims.
The first show was held at the 7 Arts Theatre while the second was hosted by Amphitheatre in Bulawayo with both shows attracting a great turn-out.
Minister Kasukuwere was the guest of honour at both shows.
Mpofu’s mission as a Green Ambassador is to promote positive attitudes and initiatives with regards to environmental issues.
Areas of importance to him include proper waste disposal, humanitarian work and protecting animals.
