Environment Management Agency director for environment protection Mrs Petronella Shoko on Tuesday told the Senate Thematic Committee on millennium goals that they have issued an order for the company to regularise its waste water disposal after releasing acidic water into sources used by villagers and domestic animals. The company relies on water from Osborne Dam.
“The ethanol plant is a welcome project, but they proceeded without an EIA,” said Mrs Shoko.
“The EIA is a tool that encompasses stakeholders and asks questions on the issues surrounding the project. The real problem is the quality of effluent, it is very acidic and there are people and animals that are dependent on the water and now they have to turn to other sources for cleaner water.”
