Greening up space an art

Andrew Mangwarara

It was a pleasure to visit Mrs Jessilyn Mandebvu’s residence in Belvedere, which, for over 30 years, has served as the hub for Pee Jay Electric.

The place specialises in selling preloved household goods, utensils and even plants.

Mrs Mandebvu’s home is unique in every respect.

As you enter the premises, you are immediately intrigued by the neatness and order you find. The garden maintenance standards are indeed high.

Various plants, some in pots and others in the ground, not only beautify the place but also speak of many hours of attention to detail by the designer.

The layout shows careful thought and a proper understanding of plants.

The vegetation tells an interesting story of many colours.

A mahogany tree (trichilia emetica) provides shade by the gate.

A number of hanging baskets and the tree philodendron (philodendron selloum) further beautify the place.

Everything is in its rightful place, giving a layout fit for a king’s palace. Even the plants that are sold here are arranged in a manner that is pleasing to the eye.

The lawn is well-maintained from the outside right into the yard.

What also captures attention is the extension of the landscape onto Bishop Gaul Avenue, where trees and a lawn have been planted, much to the betterment of the whole community.

If all residents adopt this benevolent act of beautifying spaces around them, what a green city this will become!

Remember, greening is just about the willpower to make a difference in our communities.

It is a question of collecting seeds and cuttings, and planting them. The rest comprises a few hours of gardening each week. Brick by brick, it can be done.

Meticulous attention to detail arises after a mind shift, an adoption of a positive attitude towards cleanliness, as inspired by the President, who has since initiated the clean-up campaign.
