TALENTED Zimbabwean hockey player Rachel Goromonzi continues to make huge waves in the United States after she was named the offensive Player of the Week following her five goals in just two games.Goromonzi, who plays for Limestone College, is now a senior and leads the Eastern College Athletic Conference Division II Field Hockey statistics with 11 points from two matches.

She got 10 points for the five goals while the single point came from an assist.

On Monday this week Rachel, who is the daughter of former Premiership treasurer Joseph  Goromonzi, was named ECAC DII Field Hockey League Offensive Player of the Week.

According to her college’s website, Goromonzi delivered an incredible opening week with five goals and 11 points in just two games.

That effort helped Limestone to a 5-0 victory over Newberry in the first ever game of the ECAC DII Field Hockey League and an impressive 3-0 blanking of Bloomsburg.

The 22-year old Goromonzi now has scored 55 goals in her career.

Even more impressively, Goromonzi is now fifth all-time in the Division in goals per game at 0.97 for the Saints and her coach Lindsay Jackson was naturally impressed.

“Rachel really led the attack this past week in our two games.  She contributed in some way to almost every goal and that really shows her dedication to the team and the hard work she puts in every day,” said Lindsay.

Not to be outdone, has been another Zimbabwean, Stambeni Zhanda, who has also notched one goal and one assist playing for Limestone.
Joseph said her daughter has set a benchmark of plus 30 goals by the end of her field hockey season.

“Last year she scored 24 goals but her first goals came in the fourth match. Now she has started scoring early and hinted that her target is to hit 35 goals,” said Joseph.
