Groom had last bedside laugh . . .

The Rhodesia Herald,

March 18, 1978

WHEN friends heard John Jakubowicz planned to marry his future wife yesterday, they laughed – they knew his fiancée, Mrs Jean Barnes, was in hospital recovering from meningitis.

But that did not stop John and Jean becoming husband and wife at lunchtime yesterday at a wedding ceremony which took place in a private ward at St Anne’s Hospital in Avondale.

The couple both from Salisbury, were married by the District Commissioner for Salisbury, Mr Hugh Southerns.

Said John after the ceremony: “We had planned the wedding date a long time ago and we didn’t want to change it. Jean is on the road to recovery now, so we decided to go through with the wedding-in hospital.”

A small gathering of relatives, friends and hospital staff celebrated with the newly-wed couple after the ceremony at the hospital’s reception.

LESSONS FOR TODAY

It’s a month before Zimbabwe’s 42nd independence anniversary, where we salute our gallant fighters for bringing the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Where there is a will there is always a way. The couple above succeeded in getting married on the day despite the fact that the wife was hospitalised.

It is always important to support a good thing. In this instance even hospital staff joined in the merry-making and the hospital’s reception area was turned into a venue for the ceremony.

Women are special people that need to be treated with love and care.
