THE Grange Christian School in Harare has been accused of not paying its former groundsman, Clemence Kahari, since 2021.
Kahari was first employed in 2010, as a groundsman, but later given the job of cleaning and maintaining the school’s swimming pool, without the necessary qualifications.
He said he has not received any payment as agreed since he was switched to maintaining the swimming pool.
Kahari claimed the school owed him over US$6 000 for his services.
He claimed he was promised training and support, but never received it, and when he complained, he was muzzled.
He eventually gave notice and left the job, but has yet to receive his dues.
Kahari is currently staying with a relative in Harare and has asked for help in recovering his unpaid wages so that he can take care of his family.
“I was employed as a groundsman in 2010 and they gave me another job later when they lost another employee.
“My pay was never raised even though I was doing two jobs.
“I raised it with my supervisor and he said I would be compensated, but nothing changed.
“I went to complain to the school head directly since I was working with chemicals and it was not safe for me because I did not have a certificate for the job,” said Kahari.
He said his supervisor and the deputy head allegedly started treating him badly and he decided to quit.
“I reported my issue, but nothing has been done so far.
“They call me to come and collect money but when I get there, they give me excuses all the time.
“I am currently staying with a relative in Harare because I have no place to stay here. I left my family in the village.
“I hope they will pay me what I’m owed so that I can take care of my family,” he said.
The school head, only identified as Mrs Dziva, refused to comment when contacted by H-Metro.
