Hunt For Greatness-Milton Kamwendo
FEAR is not the enemy. How you respond to it is the enemy.
Courage is essential for all greatness, leadership and personal growth.
Many struggle with fear and its relatives.
It could be the fear of failure, rejection, uncertainty or the unknown.
The Bible commands: “Fear not!”
It reminds us that God has given us a spirit of power, love and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
Ken Falke, in his book “Lead Well”, defines courage as “the ability to move through pain, fear or discomfort to take the necessary action”.
True courage is not the absence of fear, but the ability to press forward despite it.
Courage means doing what must be done, even if afraid.
Mystery of courage
Courage is often misunderstood; it is viewed as something that only a select few possess. It is associated with great leaders, military heroes or fearless entrepreneurs.
In reality, courage is a skill that you can develop, nurture and grow.
Courage is not about recklessness. It is about taking action, even when uncertainty looms. Falke notes that courage is about moving through fear, pain or discomfort to do what must be done.
The Bible supports this idea repeatedly.
God told Joshua: “Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9).
Courage is not based on our personal strength alone, but on God’s presence.
Anatomy of fear
Fear is natural. It is an emotion designed to protect you from harm.
It can also paralyse you and prevent you from achieving greatness.
Fear makes people hesitate before stepping into their greatness.
Fear has a way of amplifying negative possibilities while minimising your God-given potential.
It tells you:
“What if I fail?”
“What if people reject me?”
“What if I am not good enough?”
But courage and faith speak louder than fear.
Instead of focusing on the “what ifs” of failure, focus on the “what ifs” of victory and possibilities.
“What if God comes through?”
“What if I succeed?”
“What if I inspire others to greatness?”
Essentials of courage
Growing your courage is essential, because courage helps you take the first step.
It is the first step that shakes off the inertia.
Without courage, dreams remain unfulfilled and potential remains locked inside.
Every breakthrough begins with an act of courage.
Courage leads to growth.
When you step beyond your comfort zone, you expand your skills, confidence and resilience. Courage neutralises fear.
Fear will always be present, but courage moves forward regardless.
Through courage, you inspire others.
Your courage will encourage those around you to step up and be bold in their own lives.
Courage is like a muscle — it grows with use. Courage strengthens faith.
Without faith, you cannot do great things.
Cultivating your courage
Courage is a greatness muscle.
The more you use it, the stronger it becomes. Consider these seven steps to cultivate your courage:
1. Face your fears one step at a time
Fear shrinks when confronted.
Do not wait for fear to disappear before you act.
Take the small practical steps. Start small, but start.
Each step builds your courage. The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step.
Take that small step.
2. Change your mindset
Shift from a fear-based mindset to a faith-based mindset.
Instead of saying, “I can’t do this”, say, “With God, all things are possible.” (Matthew 19:26).
Learn to speak to yourself. Refuse to drown in fear and be terrorised by it.
3. Action despite uncertainty
Courage is about taking action, even when you do not have all the answers.
If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never start.
Ecclesiastes 11:4 says: “He who observes the wind will not sow, and he who regards the clouds will not reap.”
You do not wait for all the traffic lights to become green before driving from your home.
4. Lean on God’s promises
Fill your mind with God’s word to counteract fear.
Meditate on scriptures like Isaiah 41:10 — “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.”
Psalm 27:1 — “The Lord is my light and my salvation — whom shall I fear?”
Deuteronomy 31:6 — “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid, for the Lord your God goes with you.”
5. Be around courageous people
Courage is contagious.
Spend time with people who encourage, challenge and inspire you to rise above your fears.
Do not hang around people who keep telling you that the sky is falling.
Choose your company carefully.
6. Prepare and practise
Fear often comes from the unknown.
The more prepared you are, the more confident you become.
Practice helps you conquer fear.
Learn all you can.
Face what you fear with information and insight.
7. Fail but fear not
Failure is not the opposite of success.
It is part of the journey to greatness.
Every courageous person has experienced setbacks. Learn from failures and keep moving forward.Do not stop because you failed once or twice.
Keep at it.
Fail, but do not fear to try again.
When you grow your courage, you unlock new opportunities that fear would have kept you from experiencing.
You grow stronger in faith and resilience.
You inspire others to overcome their own fears. You live a life without regret, knowing you took bold steps towards your greatness.
Choose courage over comfort.
Grow your courage and watch your life evolve.
The world needs your courage.
Step forward boldly.
Your greatness is waiting for you to show up.
Committed to your greatness.
