adminWhen a Chronicle news crew visited the company premises on Sunday along Herbert Chitepo Street and Masotsha Ndlovu Avenue, the guards had gathered at the company premises, some in uniform, and were chanting slogans.
The workers’ committee chairperson, Mr Alson Ndlovu, said they had not been paid since last August.
“The branch manager just announced that the company can only afford to pay us $140 as our March salary,” said Mr Ndlovu.
He said workers were struggling to support their families and were finding it difficult to raise money for transport to work. Mr Ndlovu said some workers had resorted to sleeping at the company premises or in vehicles.
“The 107 employees expected a back pay of at least $1 320 each as the least paid workers get a monthly income of $220. What we received was just too little compared to what each one of us is owed,” said Mr Ndlovu.
Some of the workers’ wives could be seen under a nearby tree impatiently waiting for their husbands.
The workers’ committee secretary, Mrs Shelly Siyagwanama, said they had been trying to talk to the management for the past six months to get an explanation but were told that it was up to the Harare office to explain the non-payment of salaries.
The guards later dispersed at about 12 noon together with their wives after collecting the $140.
Contacted for comment, the security company’s branch manager, Mr Charles Gweru, denied allegations that there was a crisis.
“I cant talk to the Press but all I can say is there is no strike or protest here,” said Mr Gweru.
