AFTER having studied for a class 1 in Fitter and Turner Mechanics, Guluva 7 (real name Nkanyiso Moyo) decided to answer his calling as a hip hop artiste.
The fast-rising 26-year-old artiste, who won the Best Newcomer award at the Zim Hiphop awards last year, recently proved his worth at the Bulawayo Music Carnival where he thrilled fans with his jaw breaking punch lines. Apart from that, he established a fan base in Harare earlier this year after he performed at Wizkid’s concert.
With one album – Colour of Dreams and two mixtapes (All Sweat and No Play Mixtape Vol 1 and Kasi Slanging Mixtape) to his name, it is Guluva 7’s ability to sing in English, Ndebele and Shona that has made him one of the most sought after artistes. He easily weaves through rhymes, sending his message to a diverse crowd in a kwaito-like flare with his social commentary ghetto lyrics.
The artiste believes that originality is the best marketing tool in the music industry adding that one must always stay true to themselves.
He said it was a tough decision, migrating from mechanics to music. “I believe music can be taken as a career in Zimbabwe but one has to have the talent, work hard and brand themselves well. One also needs a little bit of luck because it’s a tough world out there,” Guluva 7 said.
His hope is to, in five years, conquer the local rap industry like Cassper and AKA are doing in South Africa.
“In five years time, I’ll be a mogul in the game, the best rapper out of my country. I also want to conquer Africa.”
