The Zvishavane outfit were clearly outclassed by Highlanders in all departments with the revered former Highlanders coach Gumbo making probably one of his worst decisions in his illustrious coaching career by pulling out the tried and trusted Gilbert Banda and Simon Shoko for Norman Togara and Zephania Ngodzo and after going down 2-0 inside 33 minutes. Ngodzo was to be the scorer of Bosso’s third goal as the black and white army threatened to score half a dozen goals.
Realising the embarrassing reality, FC Platinum fans starting singing derogatory songs while some waved placards calling for Gumbo’s head.
“Those are the views of supporters and as an executive we can not make an emotional decision here. We will meet and pave the way forward but naturally we are worried and the future of the technical bench will only be known after our meeting next week,” said the FC Platinum chairman Tadson Zhou immediately after the end of the match.
The supporters though gathered outside the main entrance and continued singing songs calling for Gumbo to go, with some saying John Phiri should take over the reins although it could not be immediately ascertained which John Phiri they were referring to.
After about half an hour of a nearly explosive situation, a courageous but clearly emotional Zhou emerged from the dugout and addressed the crowd.
“Your calls have been heard but this is not an office where we can make decisions, so just go home and allow us to make that decision in an office set up,” said Zhou.
A senior executive at Mimosa later told Chronicle Sport that a decision to relieve Gumbo of his duties had already been made soon after the match.
