GUN AMNESTY BLITZ: Surrender illegal weapons or face the consequences…

B-Metro Reporter

A COUNTRYWIDE crackdown is looming as President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a one-month gun amnesty, giving Zimbabweans a chance to surrender unlicensed firearms and ammunition — no questions asked.

The bold move, announced by police yesterday, comes amid rising cases of gun-related crimes, including armed robberies and cold-blooded murders, fuelled by illegal firearms circulating on the streets.

From 24 September to 24 October 2025, anyone in possession of an unlicensed or smuggled firearm can hand it over to their nearest police station without facing arrest. In return, they will get an official safe custody receipt.

Police said investigations have revealed disturbing trends where firearms remain in circulation after gun clubs shut down, companies closed, or licensed holders died. Others simply stopped renewing their licences or securing their weapons properly, creating a dangerous black market for criminals.

“Some licensed gun dealers and clubs are hoarding unclaimed firearms that were meant to be kept safely, which is a clear violation of the law,” said police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi.

The amnesty also targets weapons sneaked across borders and those acquired through shady deals.
Police have issued a chilling warning — once the 24 October deadline passes, the gloves come off.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police will carry out physical checks and verifications on all suspected illegal firearm holders. Anyone caught after the deadline will face full prosecution,” Nyathi said.

Licensed gun owners have also been told to update their records to stay on the right side of the law.

The move comes as Zimbabwe struggles to contain a surge in violent crimes committed with illegal firearms. Recent months have seen brazen daylight robberies, cash-in-transit heists and fatal shootings that have left communities terrified.
Comm Nyathi urged citizens to take advantage of the amnesty before it is too late.

“This is a chance for Zimbabweans to do the right thing and help create safer communities. After October 24, there will be no mercy,” warned Nyathi.
