A BULAWAYO man is lucky to be alive after a gun-brandishing thug shot him in the leg and left him bleeding on the roadside during a failed robbery in Pumula East.
Evans Nyoni, from Pumula Old suburb, had run out of fuel near the Intemba Road roundabout. As he stood outside his vehicle figuring out how to get money for fuel, a gunman appeared out of nowhere and fired a shot into the air to get his attention.
Pure hair-raising terror and chaos ensued.
“After firing into the air, he shot Evans in the leg and rushed to him, searching him for cash,” said a witness. “But Evans had nothing on him. After realising there was no money, the man just fled.”
The gunshot echoed through the quiet suburb, followed by Nyoni’s high-pitched screams of pain.
A resident on his way home heard the cries and rushed to the scene, finding Nyoni writhing in a pool of blood. An ambulance was called and arrived after a couple of hours, ferrying the injured man to Mpilo Central Hospital.
The matter was quickly reported to the police.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the shooting.
“We confirm a shooting incident where a man was shot in the leg by an armed man who demanded cash. We are appealing for information that may lead to the arrest of the suspect. Anyone with information may contact any nearest police station,” she said.
Inspector Msebele also called on the community to be more vigilant and proactive when it comes to crime prevention.
“We urge community members to report any person seen carrying weapons such as guns, machetes or knives. These are often used in crimes. Residents have a role to play in protecting each other,” she said.added that anyone who spots suspicious individuals can also help by assisting police or effecting a citizen’s arrest where safe.lice investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, residents of Pumula are shaken by the attack, which has left many fearing for their safety in the area.
