Gutu Half Marathon cancelled

THE 21st edition of the Dr Simon Muzenda Gutu Half Marathon which was scheduled for Gutu on Sunday has been called off.

The race was founded by Zimbabwe’s late Vice-President and national hero Simon Muzenda, 20 years ago to promote sports in the rural areas in a sustainable manner.

Tongai Muzenda, son to the late Vice-President and also the family spokesperson said the race has been cancelled due to tight schedules which they have had in recent months.

“The marathon will no longer take place this year as we have got many other programmes. We just held a golf tournament on 14 October and we’re also trying to make the Mzee Sports Academy a success by next year. We really apologise for the inconvenience caused,’’ said Muzenda.

He also said that the year was not good for the event as they faced financial challenges due to preparation expenses to launch the Mzee Sports Academy.

“The marathon will resume next year without any  doubt. We also want to consolidate the three events (Simon Muzenda Half Marathon, Simon Muzenda Gold Tournament and the Simon Muzenda Golf Tournament),” he said.
