Gvt to set up community radios

Transport, Communications and Infrastructural Development Minister Nicholas Goche yesterday said this would enhance efforts to mitigate damage caused by natural disasters in Zimbabwe.

Officiating at belated World Meteorological Day commemorations in Chivi, Minister Goche said the community radios would improve information dissemination of the weather patterns and save lives.
“Natural disasters have claimed thousands of lives for the past two decades. Government will ensure that the meteorological department has the resources, means and equipment to be able to monitor and accurately forecast the weather and provide early warning for Government and residents to plan accordingly.

“We are going to install community radio stations in all areas with a history of natural disasters. We have identified partners to help us in the implementation process and I am happy to say the programme will commence here at Makovere Primary School in Chivi,” he said.
Chivi district perennially suffers from the effects of natural disasters such as storms that destroy infrastructure schools and houses.

The storms have also caused a number of deaths.
Minister Goche said the community radio stations in rural areas would stimulate socio-economic development through the timeous release of critical information.

The Meteorological Services Department in partnership with Oxfarm Zimbabwe also handed over a new classroom block to replace one that was destroyed by Cyclone Eline-induced storms at the turn of the millennium.
