Gwabalanda resident fined US$120 after his vicious dog bit a passerby

A 33-year-old Bulawayo man has been fined US$120 after his vicious dog, which was lying outside his gate, suddenly charged and bit a passerby walking past his residence.

Victor Zihu of Gwabalanda suburb pleaded guilty to the charge of letting a vicious dog at large when he appeared before Western Commonage magistrate Mr Jeconia Prince Ncube.

He was ordered to a fine of US$120 or its ZiG equivalent by November 24. Failure to do so will result in him serving a two-month prison sentence.

Prosecuting, Ms Cathrine Kuzu told the court that the accused person and the complainant live in the same neighbourhood.

The incident occurred on October 3, 2025 at around 9AM, when Sithabile Nyoni (61) was walking past the accused person’s place of residence.

The court heard that the complainant saw three dogs lying outside the accused person’s gate and they appeared to be sleeping.

As she continued walking, one of the dogs suddenly charged towards her and bit her once on the right leg.

The complainant was rushed to hospital for medical attention. A police report was made, leading to the arrest of the accused person.
