THE International Rural Women and Family Day commemorations slated for Gwanda tomorrow have been postponed to November 9.

The First Lady, Dr Grace Mugabe, who was supposed to be the guest of honour, will be in Harare with President Mugabe to receive South African President Jacob Zuma who is coming to Zimbabwe for a State visit tomorrow.

Matabeleland South Provincial Development Officer in the Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Economic Development, Ms Merjury Sikhundla, announced the postponement at a meeting to evaluate preparations for the event yesterday.

“The event has been postponed to November 9. Our guest of honour, First Lady Dr Grace Mugabe will committed on this day hence we decided to push the day forward to allow her time to be with us,” said Mrs Sikhundla.

The Gwanda commemorations will be held under the theme, “Economic Empowerment for Rural Women through Mining Activities for a Healthy Family”.

On the day, Dr Mugabe is also expected to commission a women’s Stamp Mill in Colleen Bawn which the government erected through its funding partner UNDP.

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe started the project but did not finish it.

The Ministry of Women Affairs, Gender and Economic Development took over to completion.

In 2007, women miners received support from the RBZ in the form of infrastructure and fencing at designated sites.

The site in Gwanda was developed into a service centre where women would be provided with mining services.
