A violent armed robbery gang that left homes, shops, and business centres in Gwanda, Guyu, and West Nicholson in fear between September and November 2024 has been convicted, with the leaders receiving sentences of up to 32 years.
In a statement, the National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe (NPAZ) said Respect Khumalo (22), Onias Tembo (19), and Mokesi Ndlovu (18) were found guilty of a series of violent robberies committed between September and November 2024.
The NPAZ said, the gang, armed with a .45 Colt pistol, machetes, axes, pepper spray, and stones, targeted homes, shops and business centres.
“Victims were shot, assaulted, and pepper-sprayed during the attacks. Among the most serious offences were the attempted murder of a Spitzkop resident and the shooting of a security guard at the Energy Park Service Station. The gang also made off with firearms, cash in both ZAR and US$, a Toyota Vits, electronics, alcohol, and household goods,” read the statement.
The NPAZ said Magistrate Gillian Padzakashamba handed down heavy sentences, reflecting the gravity of the crimes.
“Khumalo received 32 years’ imprisonment, Tembo 16 years, and Ndlovu four years. Violent crime will not be tolerated, and the safety of our communities remains our top priority,” the authority said in a statement.
