A shop owned by local businessman Mr Monitor Nyathi was recently burnt down in what is believed to be a deliberate arson attack, sparking concern among fellow traders in the area.
Mr Nyathi’s business, a well-known establishment in the community, was completely destroyed in the fire, which broke out late last week under suspicious circumstances.
Fellow business owners in Gwanda have revealed that prior to the attack, Mr Nyathi had expressed unease over being pressured into illegal activities, specifically involvement in the buying and selling of gold.
“He confided in us that he was uncomfortable with the demands being placed on him,” said one trader who wished to remain anonymous. “He didn’t want to get involved in illegal dealings but felt trapped. He tried reporting the matter to the police, but nothing came of it.”
Another local shop owner added, “This is worrying because it looks like someone wanted to silence him or send a message. It’s unfair that a law-abiding businessman has to suffer like this.”
The police have yet to release an official statement regarding the incident or any ongoing investigation.
Community members are calling for a thorough inquiry to bring those responsible to justice and ensure the safety of local traders.
Mr Nyathi’s case highlights growing concerns about criminal pressure on legitimate businesses in the region and the challenges faced by victims seeking assistance from law enforcement.
