EVANS “Earthquake” Gwekwerere scored a beauty as Jameson Boys and Europa fought a six-goal thriller in a social football battle at Alex Sports Club on Saturday.
The former Dynamos and SuperSport United forward is one of the new additions at Jameson Boys. With his family watching, the forward lifted the spirits of his teammates with a crucial goal.
Jameson Boys have links to former Premiership side Lengthens FC.
Given the profile of the players on either side, many of them with experience of having played in the domestic top-flight league, and others who featured in the ZIFA Northern Region Division One league, the expectations were that this would be a good game.
And, in the sunshine of the capital on Sunday, the game duly delivered a cracker.
Europa, who have split into a number of factions, fielded experienced forward Chris Samakwere, who has just had a season-long stint with Golden Eagles, in the Northern Region Division One league.
The burly forward brought all his bags of tricks to the game and was quite a handful to the Jameson Boys defence, in the first half hour of the match, in which Europa were the better side.
But, with the punishing heat taking its toll on the players, there was an expectation that many of them would falter as the match wore on.
And, this proved quite true, especially for those who made a storming start to the match.
The match featured a number of former Premiership players, including Elvis Meleka and Richard Mteki.
This weekend, Jameson Boys have another cracker against David Kutyauripo’s Diaspora.
