GWERU CBD HERENTIALS emerged winner of the Herentials Group of schools and colleges sports gala, after beating Gweru Mkoba Herentials 1-0 at ZB-Barclays Sports Club last Thursday.They walked away with US$250 and medals. The gala which is in its 13th year saw all Herentials schools and colleges in Zimbabwe taking part in the two-day gala which was described a success.
The gala saw boys and girls participating in disciplines such as soccer, volleyball, tennis, basketball, netball and rugby.
Speaking at the gala, guest of honour, Zimpapers CEO Mr Justin Mutasa encouraged youths to use the opportunities they have in-order to promote their talents.
“As students there are so many opportunities that is always in front of you. I have observed a lot of talent here and I urge you to take seriously everything you do. That tenacity, determination and courage should be the driving principle that serves as your vision,” he said.
He said talent comes from God and what you become in life is by yourself.
“Develop the talent as it can land you somewhere in life. You may be born in a poor family but what you become in life is decided by you,” he said.
Mr Mutasa later donated soccer and netball kit valued at US$500.
The games proceeded well and all teams proved vibrant. Divine Chigudu, soccer captain of Gweru CBD said they won because of determination.
“We are very happy that we are the 2013 champions. It is because of our determination and courage that we are here. We also want to thank Mr Mutasa for the donation as it will go a long way in developing our talents,” he said.
Divine said the competition was meant to identify and promote hidden talents hence exchanging skills and ideas.
“We are all winners because we came here to learn and exchange skills and ideas. Talent is what you have and we should use it wisely as it also sustains livelihoods if taken seriously,” he noted.
The event was also graced by Harare regional Zimsec director Mrs Ellen Machingaidze.
Students later danced to music which some describing as “after party”.
