GWERU City Council workers who had gone for four months without being paid, finally got their August salaries last Friday. Assistant Town Clerk, Tapiwa Marerwa confirmed the development. He said workers were being paid in batches and the first group to be paid were workers in grades one to seven. We have started paying salaries to the workers and they are receiving their salaries in batches. Managers will be the last to be paid as council is facing serious cashflow challenges,” he said.
Marerwa said council was owed millions of dollars by residents who were not paying their monthly bills.
“We’re appealing to residents to pay whatever amount they have and then make payments plans to clear their debts,” he said.
Workers yesterday confirmed receiving their August salaries and said they hoped council will speed up clearing the salary backlog.
“We finally received our salaries on Friday last week but it was for the month of August. The council still owes us three months salary,” said a worker who refused to be named.
