Gweru Mayor calls for vehicle safety following Senga tragedy

Mayor of Gweru, Councillor Martin Chivhoko, has urged public transport operators to prioritise safety and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before transporting members of the public.

This comes after a commuter omnibus fire accident last week in Senga, which claimed the lives of seven pupils.

“It is painful for us to experience such deaths.

“I call upon all public transporters to ensure safety and to make sure that their vehicles are in good condition,” he said.

Mayor Chivhoko, fellow councillors, and council management are currently visiting the homes of the seven children.

In an interview, City of Gweru spokesperson Ms Vimbai Chingwaramusee said if any of the deceased are to be buried in Gweru, the council will avail free burial space. The council has also donated some food items.
