FOUR cash-in–transit Gweru municipal police officers yesterday appeared in court for allegedly assaulting a Deputy Sheriff who wanted to attach the vehicle they were using to collect cash from the Revenue Hall at Town House.
Misheck Mutindindi, Bernard Mambo, Samson Samukute and Arthur Dovo, all of Mkoba suburb, appeared for initial remand before Gweru Magistrate Tayengwa Chibanda facing two counts of assault and contravening the High Court Act.
Chibanda did not ask them to plead and remanded them out of custody on $50 bail each to April 14.
Prosecuting, Lloyd Mavhisa told the court that on March 21, the Additional Sheriff of High Court in Charge of Midlands Province, Phanuel Kufadzaruwa, went to the Gweru Municipality offices to remove the attached property.
“Kufadzaruwa approached the four accused persons who were seated in a vehicle and he removed the car keys from the ignition and moved away,” he said.
“When he was moving away, Mambo pulled him by his belt and Kufadzaruwa fell down while Mambo continued to hold his belt.”
Mavhisa said Samukute joined in and punched Kufadzaruwa once on the ribs while the other two twisted his right hand.
The prosecutor told the court that Dovo, who was left in the vehicle, drove off to an unknown destination.
The court heard that after the assault, Mutindindi, Mambo and Samukute took Kufadzaruwa to their offices and left him with their boss.
The matter was reported to the police leading to the four’s arrest.
The Gweru City Council property, which included vehicles, was last week attached following a High Court Order.
The local authority owes former Go Beer employees $49,000 in outstanding salaries and bonuses.
