Gweru police issue ban on dangerous weapons

POLICE in Gweru has issued a prohibition order banning the carrying of dangerous weapons catapults, machetes, axes, knobkerries, swords, knives or daggers in public for the next three months as cases involving the use of such weapons are now rampant and threatening public safety.

The prohibition has been necessitated by the alarming and rampant abuse of these weapons thereby threatening the existence of public safety.

The officer commanding Gweru Urban Chief Superintendent Enock Chishiri signed the prohibition order, which will run from July 25 to October 25.

“I, Chief Superintendent of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) being the regulating authority for Gweru Urban Police District, covering area of jurisdiction extending from Midlands State University (MSU) to Fletcher High School, Dayslesford, Coolmoreen Plots, Greenvale, Ridgemont, Hertfordshire, Montrose Plots, Woodlands, Mkoba 20, Mkoba 19, Mkoba 14, Mkoba 5, CSC, Heavy Industry, Dabuka, Southview extension and back to Midlands State University,” he said.

He said the police are authorised to seize without warrant, any weapon or item capable of being used as a weapon, and these would be used as exhibits in the courts.

“For the avoidance of doubt, it is declared, that any person who fails to comply with this prohibition notice shall be guilty of an offence and liable to a fine not exceeding level 5 or to imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months or to both such fine and such imprisonment,” said Chief Supt Chishiri.
