GWERU residents have lauded the intervention by the military in weeding out criminals around President Mugabe, who were causing social and economic suffering saying the move was giant leap in helping the people of Zimbabwe realise the gains of independence. Last week, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces announced that it was “against that act of injustice and we intend to protect every one of you against that” which triggered a chain of events that allowed the people of Zimbabwe to openly say they were against the continued rule of President Robert Mugabe. On Saturday, the people of Gweru joined the nation in a solidarity march with the war veterans as calls for the ouster of President Mugabe reached a cres- cendo.

Gweru Residents Association (GRA) president Mr Cornilia Selipiwe lauded the military for helping them exercise their democratic rights of peacefully demonstrating against the Executive.

“The military has liberated us. We are living in an independent Zimbabwe and I think it is just fair for us to be allowed to exercise our democratic right of protest. The Constitution has a provision that allows us to demonstrate peacefully whenever we feel like, but we were being denied that right and I am happy the military has helped us to do that.

“Zimbabweans have always been a peace-loving people and on Saturday they proved that during the march, there was no looting, no injuries reported. “We have full respect of our security services and the military which helped us to feel like people with their rights,” he said.
