Zwelonke Mloyiswa, the GSC chairman, said they formed the club with the blessing of the rugby motherbody, Zimbabwe Rugby Union.
The Gweru chairman said once the women’s side is in place its first competitive match will be against the Pangolins which is the country’s national women’s team.
“We have been approached by ZRU to have a team for the ladies and as Gweru Sports Club we are glad that we will have a team for women which we hope will compete with distinction in the national league.
“From the correspondence we have received, indications are that once formed, the team will play its first competitive match against the Pangolins and therefore we are calling on all female rugby enthusiasts to come and join the team.
“It is our hope and belief as Gweru that we will produce some of the finest female rugby players through this initiative like what has happened to the men’s side which has churned out some fine rugby players over the years,” he said.
Turning to the men’s team preparations for next season, Mloyiswa said they will hold trials to recruit youngsters and blend them with experienced players.
Their aim for the season in men’s action is a top four finish.
Gweru returned to the national league last year after an eight-year absence after the club collapsed in 2004 owing to the economic challenges the country was facing.
The side was only resuscitated in 2010 when it joined the Midlands/Matabeleland League which it competed in for two seasons before gaining promotion into the national league.
In the just-ended season, Gweru finished seventh in the eight team league ahead of Manyame-based Airforce who were relegated.
