GOVERNMENT has given vendors until today to vacate the streets and pavements in Gweru central business district (CBD) as it moves to curb the spread of typhoid, which has so far claimed seven people in the city.
According to statistics released by Ministry of Health and Child Care, as of Thursday, 1 313 cases of suspected typhoid had been recorded in the Midlands capital.
Speaking during a tour of Gweru by Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa, Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs Owen Ncube said Government, together with the Gweru City Council, had ordered vendors to vacate the streets and go to their designated selling points.
Minister Ncube said the province’s Joint Operation Command (JOC) had been notified of the development and were requested to provide assistance if needed.
“We have asked the vendors to vacate the CBD and go to their designated selling points where there are proper facilities,” he said.
“There is a typhoid outbreak in Gweru and we need to manage the situation, so we have asked them to leave so that we contain the disease.”
