WATER problems continue to haunt the Midlands with Gweru entering a fifth day without running water following a recurrent electrical fault at Gwenoro Dam.
Director of engineering services Engineer Praymore Mhlanga said water supplies had been further affected because the local authority was operating two pumps instead of the recommended five.
“We’ve encountered an electrical fault which affected water supply pumps at Gwenoro dam. The transformer went up in flames. Zesa has been repairing the transformer on site,” he said.
Last week, Mhlanga said the city was going to embark on water rationing because water levels in the supply dam were running critically low.
In Gokwe, there has been no tap water since Tuesday after the break down of water pumps.
Mberengwa District has adopted water rationing to conserve available water until the next rainy season.
Mberengwa Rural District Council chief executive officer, Julius Mashavakure, said: “We’re embracing water rationing starting in March due to critical water levels in our biggest supply dams Mundi-Mataga and Chimwe Dam. They can’t supply us up to October or the next rainy season if we continue receiving abnormal rainfalls”.
He said residents of Mberengwa town should use water sparingly.
