Life for the three sisters Sophie (26) and Netsai Nhokwara (24) and their cousin Rosemary Chakwizira (28) took a turn for the worse ever since they were released from remand prison.
Gweru residents are curious to find out more from the trio.
Our Midlands Bureau yesterday caught up with Sophie and Netsai at their family home in Mkoba Village 4.
Their cousin, Chakwizira, lives in Riverside.
Neighbours said the three, who were reluctant to talk to this reporter, were failing to lead normal lives as residents jostle to catch a glimpse of them whenever they appeared in public.
“They are now living under ‘house arrest’ as they are afraid to be subjected to public ridicule. In fact, the two sisters and their cousin are so afraid that they rarely attempt to venture out as frequently as they used to do before their arrest,” said a neighbour.
The neighbour said the only time the three suspects ventured out was when they were fulfilling their bail conditions of reporting to Gweru Central Police Station on Mondays and Fridays.
It was on one such occasion that they were allegedly mobbed by people on Monday. The general belief among residents was that the three were leading lavish lives prior to their arrest.
They are said to own a fleet of cars, which they would allegedly use in abusing men. They face 17 counts of aggravated indecent assault. The three female suspects who are jointly charged with their male friend, Thulani Ngwenya (24), according to the State, used top-of-the-range cars in committing the 17 counts of rape they are facing.
There was, however, little or no sign of this lavish lifestyle.
They inherited an eight-roomed house from their deceased parents.
Further investigations revealed that the two Nhokwara sisters were using only two rooms with the rest of the house being occupied by tenants.
The house is yet to be completed as it needs to be plastered and painted.
When the news team arrived, Sophie Nhokwara and her younger sister Netsai were sleeping in the passage.
The sisters were shabbily dressed.
The tall fiery-looking Sophie, however, said: “I am sorry at the moment we cannot talk about anything to the media. We have itching stories to tell concerning this matter especially following several false reports about us that appeared in the media. But at the moment our hands are tied.”
Sophie, however, admitted that they were living a difficult life but denied having been attacked by members of the public.She also denied having given any media organisation an interview.
“I have heard that there are reports that we were attacked but I am not aware of the source of that story. It’s true that everywhere we go, especially here in Gweru, members of the public are just eager to have a glimpse of us maybe because of the reports they have heard about us.”
