Gwevedzi finds own groove

AFRO acoustic ensemble, Gwevedzi, reckons it has created a unique sound that will definitely put Zimbabwe on the international map.

Assembled in Dzivaresekwa, the group is famed for  its fusion of the mbira, guitars and saxophone.

They also sing deep Shona and soothing English lyrics.

The band, which drew its inspiration from artists like Oliver Mtukudzi, Bhundu Boys and Mbira DzeNharira, told H-Metro their music links the new and old generations.

“Our music is a fusion of African traditional rhythms and any other genres”, said Gwevedzi leader, Wilfed Nikisi

He also revealed that the group was working on a new project.

“We will be releasing a new album early next year and hope our fans are ready for the new music,” said Nikisi.

Since its inception in 2016, the band has had two albums –Tsambo and Nhugo.

One of their songs was nominated for best soundtrack in the movie “Mirage” directed by Malaika Mashandu at this year’s Africa Movie Academy Awards.

“One of our most popular songs, Ndinouya, tackles the dynamics of long-distance relationships.

Vhunze is another track, which has been doing well, after it was adopted as the soundtrack for ZBC TV series, Vhunze.
