GZU on massive student recruitment drive

GREAT Zimbabwe University (GZU) in Masvingo has embarked on a massive student recruitment drive aimed at raising student population to 15 000 by 2018, an official has said.
The university is holding road shows and exhibiting courses on offer to potential students in the Masvingo central business district and those who are willing to enroll with the institution can register instantly after producing relevant documents.

In an interview, the university Vice-Chancellor Professor Rungano Zvobgo said the university has employed a number of strategies to raise student population to high levels in three years’ time and the road shows were part of the means to the end.

He said initially the university had planned road shows simply to advertise its programmes to the Masvingo community but they later realised that it could be an effective recruitment strategy after having enrolled a number of potential students.

“At first the road shows were meant to advertise our programmes to the Masvingo community. We want to raise awareness to the community on the existence of their university of choice, what we offer and promote a culture of learning among our people. However, through the process, we received enquiries from potential students and we had to register them. The response is amazing because we got quite a number,” said Prof Zvobgo.

Prof Zvobgo said GZU has a student population of 9 700 at present and the multi-campus institution has a capacity to ammodate more.
