H-Metro Reporter
H-METRO reporter, Arron Nyamayaro, was assaulted by officials running a housing cooperative which is under fire for allegedly fleecing desperate home seekers.
Teurai Ropa 2 Housing Cooperative, fronted by Wellington Madziire, stands accused of allegedly defrauding its members from 2017 and reselling the residential stands to home seekers at exorbitant prices.
When H-Metro visited their site on Saturday, at Kuwadzana Phase 3, Madziire, his secretary who was only identified as Vhenduka, turned on our reporter.
A cooperative member who is a policeman, Constable Thomas, confisticated the reporter’s mobile phone only to return it after the case was reported at Kuwadzana Police Station.
“We do not want journalists here, who sent you here, get away or else we will bundle you into the vehicle and deal with you,” said Madziire.
“We do not want any of our photographs in your newspaper.”
One of the cooperative members told H-Metro that the initial fee to join was set at US$1,000, with members being assigned specific stand numbers and they were even shown their stand numbers.
“We came to know that this cooperative has been operating as a scam, systematically re-allocating previously sold stands to new buyers and collecting additional fees.
“Additional monthly fees for development and surveyor costs are routinely collected, yet members have repeatedly been prevented from building structures on their stands, with different excuses being given.
“Many members who have sought clarification have met with the same excuses or were blocked from further communication with the cooperative leaders,” said the member.
Land barons have been under fire for duping desperate home seekers by conniving with City of Harare Housing department officials in faking documents.
