HARARE Athletic Board (HAB) vice-chairman, Aaron Whyte, said he was impressed by the turn up at the HAB Cross Country selection meet held at Allan Wilson School on Saturday.
Harare province selected a team ahead of the Nationals to be held on Saturday next week in Bindura.
This was the first competitive athletics event for Harare province this year.
“The turnout was very impressive. It met our expectations and we are very pleased considering it being the first event of the season for us and the whole country,” said Whyte.
Whyte believes the athletes gave their best and exhibited eagerness to win.
“It was an exciting show from them. The energy and determination made us witness some entertaining duets,” he said.
He said they had now shifted their focus to the Nationals and believes Harare will claim gold.
“We are happy with the team we have assembled. I believe we are ready to give our best shot. We respect all other provinces, but as a province we are ultimately going for gold.
“We are also looking forward to a very successful season. We believe Harare leads while others follow,” said Whyte.
Owen Slowly, one of the athletes selected to represent Harare in the senior men’s category, said he is excited being part of the provincial team.
“I’m happy being part of the provincial team. It’s reward for the hard work we have put in all the days of preparations.
“I am optimistic that at the Nationals we are going to put up a good shift as a team and make the province proud. It’s going to be tough as I expect a tough challenge from other provinces, but we are ready,” said Slowly.
