HABITUAL Chipinge car breaker Petros Ngwachena (23) will spend the next two years behind bars for breaking into three cars and stealing property worth hundreds of dollars
Ngwachena, of no fixed abode, was convicted by Chipinge magistrate Mr Noah Gwatidzo for breaking and stealing from three cars in the town.
Prosecuting, Mr Witness Nyamundaya said on May 26 at around 10pm, Ngwachena went to Mr Bret Konikere’s house in the medium area of the town and used duplicate car keys to open his Mazda Altenza vehicle.
He stole one black Lenovo G50 laptop, a laptop power pack and a black laptop bag. He went away unnoticed leaving the car doors open.
The value of the stolen was pegged at $600 and nothing was recovered.
In the second count, the court heard that on September 17 at around 11pm, Ngwachena used the duplicated keys to unlock Sandra Mutasa’s Toyota Runx vehicle and stole prepared chips and chicken worth $10.
In the last count that happened on October 9 at around 9pm where he accused used the duplicate keys to unlock Simbarashe Chiororo’s Mazda 626 which was parked in his yard and stole a black jacket worth $30 which was on the back seat.
In his defence, Ngwachena said he resorted to crime to earn a living.
“I pray for forgiveness from the court. I resorted to crime to earn a living since I do not have parents to turn up to,” pleaded Ngwachena.
He was sentenced to 15 months in prison of which three months were suspended on condition that he does not commit the same offence, leaving to serve an effective 12-month jail term.
