A HABITUAL robber that terrorised revellers at a popular nightclub in Chipinge has been slapped with a four-year jail term following his conviction and sentencing on robbery charges.
Tinashe Robert Tauya(19) of Gaza E, Chipinge, appeared before Chipinge provincial magistrate, Mr Alfred Chinembiri, facing robbery charges.
Tauya, who is a repeat offender after being convicted of two separate theft charges in 2020 and 2022, was convicted on his own plea of guilty to the charges.
Asked why he committed the offence, Tauya could only plead for forgiveness as he cited his health condition.
“Your Worship, don’t jail me as I am sick. During my remand days in prison, the prison officers gave me a lot of sadza with no relish, yet I am supposed to eat light food only because of my stomach problems,” pleaded Tauya.
Prosecuting, Mr Isaac Tangwena said on March 30, the convict met one Prince Mlambo at a popular night club in Gaza O.
“Tauya then followed the complainant outside the night club and manhandled him by the waist, resulting in Mlambo falling on the ground.
“He then searched the victim’s pockets, snatched US$150 and vanished from the scene. During the scuffle, Mlambo sustained a deep cut on the left arm after falling on hard surface, but was not medically examined.
“Mlambo managed to track Tauya until he reached Chipinge Central Business District (CBD) and confronted him. He was then assisted by members of the public to apprehend the accused, but only recover US$6 from the accused person as he had already spent part of the stolen money on beer and clothing,” said Mr Tangwena.
Tauya’s plea for leniency fell on deaf ears after Mr Chinembiri slapped him with a four-year jail term.
Six months were suspended on condition that Tauya reimburses Mlambo’s money.
