AN unrepentant 19-year-old Chikanga serial burglar was recently jailed after he tried to steal property worth $1 600. Talkmore Chinyanga (19) was convicted on his own plea of guilty when he appeared before Mutare senior magistrate, Mrs Sekai Chiundura on unlawful entry and theft charges. He was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.“You have proved that you do not want to reform and you are not fit to be in the society. You therefore deserve a deterrent sentence regardless of the fact that the stolen goods were recovered,” said Mrs Chiundura.
Representing the State was Mr Donald Mudadirwa.
It was the State’s case that on July 19, Chinyanga broke into House Number 8048, Chikanga Extension and tried to steal a 40-inch Sony LED television set, a Toshiba laptop, a Sony DVD player and a pair of black shoes which all belonged to Dean Mugabe.
“Chinyanga climbed the pre-cast wall and gained entrance. He entered the house through a window which had been left slightly opened. Mugabe came back while Chinyanga was still in the house.”
He was subsequently arrested as he tried to escape. The loot was recovered from a nearby house.
In sentencing him, Mrs Chiundura took into consideration that Chinyanga had a number of previous convictions on similar theft charges.
When he was only 17, he hot-wired and stole his pastor’s motor vehicle and was sentenced to four years imprisonment of which he only served two years.
Upon his release, Chinyanga stole from his neighbour and was imprisoned again.
He had just been released from prison in April this year after he stole an iPad and smartphones from a local pastor and was sentenced to six months in jail.
